Unlike younger age groups, refugee children aged 8+ are conscious of what displaced them, and lack support systems in camps to help process the trauma. Their very identity was under attack back home and this realization can inhibit positive self-development. Our program helps children living in two refugee sites abandon previously learnt prejudices towards gender and ethnicity, dispel stigmas around being refugees, and embrace a shared Scout identity and culture. Through values-based education delivered in weekly language classes, creative workshops and excursions into the local environment, we build strong foundations in refugee children that prepare them for life outside the camps.
